After working in excess of 10 years as an X-Ray technologist, Rhonda Hamilton returned to school to continue her education in the field of ultrasound technology. Following an extensive ultrasound program at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, Rhonda returned to Lethbridge to work in ultrasound imaging at a small Radiology Clinic.
Her next step was to work at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital for five years. It was there, in 1993, that Rhonda made the decision to follow her entrepreneurial instincts and open "Ultrasound Preview Ltd".
In 1991 Rhonda Hamilton had been in the medical profession for 20 years and loved her job as a sonographer. She loved to see the excitement on expectant mothers' faces when they saw their unborn child for the first time.
But the writing was on the wall for any health care facility which received government funding. In 1993, budget cutbacks became a reality. When the government proclaimed that the once-standard, free fetal picture, provided by hospital ultrasounds would in the future be an "unnecessary frill", Rhonda began developing an entrepreneurial idea.
Rhonda, a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, decided to start her own business and offer expectant parents a peek at their unborn child through a "Window to the Womb".
She embarked on an extensive market research plan to determine if expectant parents would want to bond with their unborn child through a high-feedback, non diagnostic ultrasound scan, and be willing to pay for this opportunity.
The survey concluded that 69% of those surveyed would support a non-diagnostic ultrasound business. The survey also indicated that once this "new concept" had been moved from the introductory stage into the awareness and acceptance stages (estimated to be five years), then more expectant parents would be interested. The survey also concluded that those who had enjoyed this experience with their first child, would be interested in ultrasound images for other pregnancies. To date, these expectations have been exceeded!
Ultrasound Preview Ltd. is the first non-diagnostic ultrasound business in Canada and the only business of its kind in Alberta.
