You may have concerns about the safety of ultrasound scanning and the effects it may have on your unborn child. We would like to take a moment to address these safety concerns, and hopefully put your fears to rest.
Ultrasound Preview Ltd. operates in Calgary
and Pincher Creek, Alberta, Canada. The equipment used in non-diagnostic
ultrasound scanning is regulated by the Government of Alberta Department of Labor. This department has publicly stated that:
"There is no plan to regulate ultrasound use because, in the department's opinion, there are no proven health hazards."
Dr. Davis Elliott, head of Diagnostic Ultrasound at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta says prenatal ultrasound is completely safe and women should not be concerned about having the procedure. In an interview with the Calgary Herald he stated that:
"Ultrasound of pregnant women is a safe procedure and to the best of scientific knowledge there are no side effects."
A documented research study by Geoffrey Anderson for the Royal commission on New Reproductive Technologies found that the number of ultrasounds performed in Ontario and British Columbia increased by 240% from 1981 - 1990. In spite of this, Anderson stated:
"The trials showed no statistically significant impact on the health of a newborn baby or on infant mortality."
